Policy and Governance

Government agencies, public authorities and other organizations must take strong roles in sustainability.
Many have undertaken specific initiatives or adopted policy frameworks / guidelines to ensure that their practices incorporate sustainability. This includes incorporating sustainability in strategic planning, implementing recycling programs in their offices, or creating specific projects to encourage sustainability. As well, many other individuals and organizations are calling for a re-examination of policies and practices to ensure that sustainability (environmental, economic and social) is taken into account. They offer alternative solutions to issues, such as encouraging citizens to use their electoral systems to help effect meaningful change and to hold public bodies accountable for their responses to sustainability. Establishing partnerships and using a collaborative approach are essential to the successful design and implementation of changes to policy and practice. By working together, governments, NGOs, businesses and community groups can truly determine what are the best solutions for a specific community.
