Land Use

The challenges of land use.
Urban sprawl is threatening agricultural lands, green space, and recreational opportunities. Productive agricultural land is being sacrificed for the development of roads and buildings. Distances people need to travel, especially between home and work, are greater which leads not only to increases in transport-related fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions, but to a reduction in healthy forms of transport (such as walking and cycling). Green areas are continually disappearing under buildings and pavement. Land use and development processes that aim for increased density and reduced urban sprawl, such as SmartGrowth, can ensure land has ecological, social, and economic benefits.
